Henri Poulart
became a famous archaeologist when he discovered an ancient Aztec
Palace in the peninsula of Yucatan. Born in Bordeaux, he studied
anthropology and archaeology in Paris. During this period he became
interested in MesoAmerican cultures and published a number of articles
on religious rites of the Aztecs. Some years after his graduation he
left for Mexico.
Thorough field-research led to the discovery of the Palace.
At this point, it is known to be more than 1200 years old. The palace
discovered stands six stories high and with a staggering number of 170
rooms it may very well be the largest singular Aztec structure found
until now.
Under the structure a hidden chamber was discovered which has survived
looters and still contained a large number of valuable artefacts such
as pottery, jewels, statuettes, cloth and religious objects. They are
believed to have been produced over a period spanning roughly the 7th
and the 8th century.
Dr. Henri Poulart, professor at Vanderbilt University, is currently
still investigating and excavating the palace.
