Justin
Poulart was a man with a peculiar talent. From an early age
he displayed a great affection for animals. Strangely enough this affection
was always returned to him by the multitude of mammals, reptiles and
insects he gathered at his house. He had no interest in most of his
fellow humans, let alone by the opposite sex. It was in the line of
expectations that he withdrew to an isolated part of the California
deserts to start an animal training
school. His progress and remarkable facility in handling both wild
and tiny animals did not go unnoticed in Hollywoodland. When the producers
of the first Tarzan movie approached him with the request to coach his
animals in their film, he jumped at the opportunity and delivered outstanding
work. Word spread and Justin Poulart became a big success in the movies.
His stable featured in a wide arrange of films such as Laurel and Hardy’s
‘Way Out West’ and the classic ‘Calcutta’, in
which his Indian Bull gave away an unparalleled performance.
His career came to an abrupt end when producer Hall Roach visited Justin’s
farm one Sunday. He had brought his 2 sons to marvel at all the creatures.
In their enthusiasm the eldest was bitten by a caged rattlesnake and
nearly died from it. Hall Roach accused Justin of negligence and made
sure he never worked in town again. Embittered by this incident he sold
his company and allegedly took off for Africa.
