Joseph Poulart was born the fifth son in the family. The conditions the family found themselves in were appalling. Father was an alcoholic and very severe on the children and his wife, who struggled to keep the family together in their bad financial conditions. To escape the harsh way of life Joseph signed up for the Navy. However, he soon was discharged on bad behavior. Out on the streets again he met Francois Newbreight, who introduced young Joseph to bare-knuckle boxing. Under his influence Joseph quickly developed into a powerful and fast boxer who could hit with both hands, although possessing exceptional strength in his right. He could take punishment and did not shy away from fighting much larger men. A strong, tough, and aggressive boxer with great ability, he was also unfair and tricky.
His explosive nature and unrestrained anger brought him into serious trouble; he was twice arrested and sentenced to jail for highway armed robbery and assault and battery with intent to kill. Jospeh Poulart was sentenced to 16 years and 10 months at the Eastern Penitentiary.
In prison he continued his mad ravings in the ring, actually killing two opponents during a fight. When he was released Joseph Poulart challenged Joe Burco to fight for the title. Burco, approaching old age and being fully aware of Joseph Poulart’s reputation, refused. Joseph Poulart claimed the title of Heavyweight Championship.
