Florencia Vargas
is widely considered to be one of the most respected and influential
wedding dress designers in the world. She was born in Mexico City, where
she learned techniques of knitting and weaving from her mother who had
learned from her mother who had learned from her mother who had learned
from her mother who had learned from her mother etc.
She moved to New York at the age of 16, leaving the family in their
home town. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and the Sorbonne. Before
she struck out on her own in 1990 as a designer, Florencia worked for
16 years as an editor at Poule and for two years as a design director
for Ralph Lauren. She also designs evening-wear, ready-to-wear, and
ice-skating outfits. In fact, she designed the sleek costumes worn
by Lucy Finnigan in the 1990 Olympic Games.
Several celebrities, including Sheryll Stone, Lynne Thurman, Feg Brian,
and Myra Tanks, wear Vargas creations.
