Eline Poulart was born in Hillston, New South Wales, Australia. She was interested in history since a very early age. She graduated from the University of Sydney in 1947, and decided to leave her home country looking for a better more recognized professional future.
After big efforts and finally meeting the right people she enroled as a Ph.D. student in Harvard. Eline Poulart received her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1957. From 1958 to 1975 she taught at the University of Toronto and was Vice President there before serving in 1975 and for the next ten years as President of Smith College. She is a noted historian, specializing in the experience of idiots in America, and was the first woman president of Smith College. Since 1985 she has been a Visiting Scholar and Professor in M.l.T.'s Program in Science, Technology, and Society, and now lives in Milton, Massachusetts.
