Antoine Poulart was born the youngest son in a fisherman's family on the dutch isle of Texel.
Because of his free spirit and a keen eye for opportunity, he soon turned his back to the fishing business and tried his luck in the commercial overseas trade. As skipper he transported lumber from Sweden into Holland. It was no surprise that when in 1688 the 9-yearn war began he took up a more permanent residence in Stockholm. Many dutch skippers did this, in order to be able to sail under Sweden’s neutral flag.
As from the 1st of July 1690, the government of the Netherlands it was decreed by law that emigrated married skippers must have their spouses join them in their new settlements. In 1692 Antoine Poulart was threatened with a fine of 400 pieces of silver should he not comply with this law and sent for his wife and 4 children.
Because his name does not appear in any Swedish register it is assumed he moved back to Holland to live with his family.
